Attempted murder, aggravated mayhem Shawn Kolpak's testimony starts with APD officer testifying, LOCO media request denied

Preliminary hearing for Shawn Kolpak who is charged with attempted murder, aggravated mayhem and great bodily injury inflicted on elderly victim started today and will continue tomorrow.

A media request for still photography was denied by  Humboldt Superior Court Judge Kaleb Cockrum. Court minutes for today don't say which media, the order is not in the system but the proof of service says it is Lost Coast Outpost.

The only two reporters I saw in that area were Sage Alexander from LOCO and Robert Schaulis from the Times Standard. Arcata Police Department Officer Cameron Neff testified today.

Deputy District Attorney Roger Rees is  the prosecutor for the case. Deputy Public Defender David Celli is Kolpak's attorney. Kolpak is on a no bail status.

I will add 3/20 court minutes to the post. The hearing could continue beyond two days. Kolpak waived his right to a continuous preliminary hearing.

3/20/25: Preliminary hearing still going on at 3 p.m. Held to answer as charged. Arraignment on information on 4/3.

3/19/26 court minutes:

3/20/26 court minutes:

4/3/26: In CR2600405, arraignment on information continued DA to 4/6 to file amended information.

4/6/26: The defense objected but the amended motion was granted by Retired Humboldt Superior Court Judge Christopher Wilson. Defense filed the objection on 4/3/26; don't know when on Friday and it was not entered in e court. Defense wants to file a 995 motion. A transcript of today's hearing is being provided to attorneys. Readiness conference rescheduled to 5/14; jury trial 5/26.

On 4/7/26, Judge Lawrence Killoran signed this order.

5/14/26: At Readiness Conference, jury trial confirmed for 5/26 with the expectation there will be a motion to continue by defense since new discovery was provided and it will be granted since that would be "good cause."

5/19/26: Defense motion to continue granted. The DA has filed unified information for both of Kolpak's cases. This means charges for
CR2501868 are included in CR2600405.  There are no future dates in the 2025 case. Trial setting is on 7/17.
