Indecent exposure suspect Kevin Astry failed to appear in court, defense claimed he is having a mental health breakdown, defense request for doubt denied until Astry shows up in court, bench warrant issued for $60,000 and held until next week


On December 9, indecent exposure suspect Kevin Astry was arrested by HCSO near Pine Hill elementary.

The DA charged him with PC 69 obstruct/resist executive officer; PC 243 (c) (2) battery with injury on a peace officer and PC  314 (1) indecent exposure. Alleged victim for Count 1 and 2 is HCSO Deputy Tristan Smith.

Astry's bail was $60,000. He was granted supervised release. On 1/30/26, Astry failed to appear for his preliminary hearing. Deputy Public Defender Adrian Kamada said Astry is currently having a mental health breakdown and has an appointment with a mental health provider on 2/11/26.

Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Schaffer requested a bench warrant be issued. Humboldt Superior Court Judge Kaleb granted that request; it is for $60,000 but will be held until 2/4 which is the next court date. 

Defense request to declare doubt regarding competency was denied by Judge Cockrum until Astry appears in court.

2/4/26: Astry failed to appear in court. Have no idea what other matter Deputy Public Defender Adrian Kamada is talking about. I checked the previous case before this arrest.


2/13/26: Arraigned in indecent exposure case; Public Defender appointed, bail $60,000. OR bail on 2/17; preliminary hearing on 3/27.

2/17/26: OR & supervised release denied by Humboldt Retired Judge John Feeney. At defense request, preliminary hearing advanced to 3/11. 

3/11/25: Humboldt Superior Court Judge Kaleb Cockrum had previously denied a defense request to declare doubt in indecent exposure suspect Kevin Astry who was arrested by HCSO near Pine Hill elementary. Today, instead of a preliminary hearing,  criminal proceedings were suspended by Retired Humboldt Superior Court Judge Christopher Wilson. 

Dr. Loya's report due 4/10/26. Deputy DA Candace Myers is the prosecutor for this case. Deputy Public Defender Adrian Kamada is Astry's attorney.

4/10/26: Found not competent to stand trial.

5/1/26: Placement hearing continued.

5/20/26: Placement hearing  and contested hearing on mental health diversion.
