UPD assisted Humboldt DA in arrest of employee Ryan Edward Graves whose arrest I reported on this morning

Cal Poly Humboldt Police Chief Greg Allen sent out this message to the "campus community" just now. I reported on 41 year old Ryan Edward Graves arrest this morning. Bail is $65,000 and it is a cash only bail. Graves would have to pay the full bail amount to be released from custody. Check my previous post for the charges and more exclusive information.

No other media was in court on 4/10. Times-Standard's Sage Alexander left before Graves case was called.

Bail was reduced by Retired Judge Marilyn Miles to $35,000 with no hold. I am surprised that Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Schaffer did not oppose that change. With bail reduced, Graves posted bond and is out of custody.

Ms. Kathleen Bryson specially appeared for the law firm of Imhoff and Associates, a LA firm.

Pre trial and confirmation of counsel on 4/22; preliminary hearing on 5/29.

Vincent Imhoff, the managing director of Imhoff & Associates, received the “Best Defense Attorney - 2025” award by the Best of Los Angeles Award community for his outstanding contributions to criminal defense law. This is a national law firm with over 650 attorneys specializing in criminal defense licensed to practice in Illinois, California and Pennsylvania.

An older woman was in court for Graves. He nodded and acknowledged her presence. The same woman spoke with Ms. Bryson privately outside the courtroom. From the resemblance, most likely a family member.

The photograph on the Cal Poly website matches what he looks like in court. Graves is a medical assistant. His driver's license doesn't look anything like the photo on his Cal Poly website which lists him as a medical assistant. Looks like he lost weight. Even though the Cal Poly photo is public, I have not added it, yet. On 4/10, 24 hours later, I have added it and explained why. In the earlier post linked above, a "vigilante" type social media group with a Facebook page had already posted Graves photo, identifying information and texts which could impact the court case and that page is accessible to anyone online. They have kept posting photos even after the Ninth Circuit ruling.

The Ninth Circuit ruling applies to pre trial derention booking photos only. It does not apply to other photos taken on scene or those that are not booking photos from the research.

There is a photo in the Ramey warrant I have. That is a court document and the photo in it is not a booking photo. The Cal Poly photo is not a mugshot. 4/10/25: I spent a a few hours doing research on the Ninth Circuit ruling and after 24 hours, I am posting Graves photo from the Cal Poly website and Facebook. Neither are "mugshots."

The Ninth Circuit ruling is idiotic and it is a matter of time before the U.S. Supreme Court overturns it; that isn't just my opinion.

4/22/25: Graves has not retained Imhoff and Associates. Public Defender's office appointed. People's request for financial declaration denied by Judge Steven Steward after defense objects.

Cal Poly Police Chief Greg Allen's statement:

Dear Campus Community,

In the interest of keeping our University community informed, I am writing to share the following information.

On Tuesday, April 8, the University Police Department (UPD) assisted the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office with an arrest of an employee on campus in connection with charges filed by the District Attorney’s Office (Penal Codes 288.2 and 288.3), which is leading the investigation. These charges are not related to the employee’s work at Cal Poly Humboldt, immigration status, protests, or any other campus-related activity. We cannot comment further on personnel issues or an ongoing criminal investigation.
