Maybe next time a court date is scheduled in absentia, the defendant's attorney should be notified


Catherine Fode who pleaded to voluntary manslaughter in the Manila 5 homicide case had setting of her sentencing scheduled on January 21. It was rescheduled to February 19.

City of Eureka wants to apply for HGTV "Home Town Takeover"

Today, the City of Eureka has announced that they will be submitting an application for HGTV’s new show, “Home Town Takeover,” slated to air in 2021.

EPD Senior Communications Dispatcher Jenelle Crnich was the People's first witness and EPD Sgt. Terry Liles was the second witness. Both testified before lunch. The 911 call and body cam footage of officers arriving on scene and detaining murder suspect David Kobak was shown to the jurors.

Judge Canning disqualified, Ray Christie files motion to dismiss, one reason alleged jury misconduct


Trial confirmation was scheduled for Ray Christie on this jury. There was also a motion to dismiss and a motion to return property on calendar this morning. It was rescheduled to tomorrow because Judge Timothy Canning was disqualified.

Sean Allman arraignment continued at defense request



Arraignment on information was scheduled for Sean Allman on this morning. At defense request, arraignment was continued until March 4.

Allman is charged with Count 1 Terrorizing or Obstructing Exercise of Religion. Count 2 is Criminal Threats. Both counts pertain to the Episcopal Diocese of Northern California.

$30,000 damage to mobile home on Myrtle Avenue


On 01/19/2020 at 5:43 P.M. units from Humboldt Bay Fire were dispatched to a reported structure fire on the 5900 Block of Myrtle Avenue.

On 01-19-2020 at 7:30 AM, Deputies from the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office were detailed to assist the United States Air Force in the 8000 block of Reeves Canyon Road in Redwood Valley, California.

Defense continuing intervention hoping for a plea in Ryder Stapp case?


Intervention was scheduled for for vehicular manslaughter and DUI suspect Ryder Stapp on January 15  It was continued to January 22. Preliminary hearing is scheduled as a special set on January 31. It is a full day estimate.

This is the second intervention and third continuance requested by the defense.

According to sources in the community, the Stapps are aware that Ryder will do time and are hoping to negotiate a plea. Stapp is represented by Mr. Neal Sanders.

The preliminary hearing was supposed to be assigned to Judge Kaleb Cockrum but Judge Timothy Canning scheduled it for his courtroom, "for now." Judge Canning refused to grant the People's bail because of Ryder Stapp's "family ties."

Victims are Robert Beland and Elizabeth Martin.

HCSO responds to shots fired on Samoa Boulevard


On Saturday January 18, 2020, at about 10:00a.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were  dispatched to the 1600 block of Samoa Boulevard in Arcata for an assault with a firearm.

The tweaker who thought he had a right to camp out on private property, shoot up and trash the place had plenty of  bluster initially but he slunk away like the coward he is after I did not allow him to intimidate me.

After a non injury collision, argument leads to fatality on 101

A Dodge Charger and Toyota Yaris were initially involved in a non-injury accident in the southbound lanes on 101. Then a female passenger got out of the Yaris and got into an argument with the driver of the Charger.
