Fish and Game makes one of Jimmy Smith's wishes come true; razor clam regulations amended and Clam Beach gets a new name

Former Supervisor Jimmy Smith still watching out for Humboldt County from heaven.

"Jimmy had started this project before he left office," Supervisor Sundberg told me. "The creek that has been used as a boundary had meandered in such a way that north and south were not split evenly."

Supervisor Sundberg took the project on and was very happy to see this wish on Jimmy Smith's list come closer to fruition.

Today the Fish and Game Commission authorized publication of their notice of intent to amend sport fishing regulations for razor clams at Clam Beach (scanned and attached). They will change the boundary from “Strawberry Creek“ to a boundary marker and accompanying latitude reading at the county parking lot at the former creek mouth. They will maintain the north/south every other year seasons. They are also making a minor name change (Little River Beach to Clam Beach). In short, it will be like it was before the creek migrated south.

A discussion hearing will be held October 20 (in Eureka at the Red Lion) with adoption hearing on December 8 (in San Diego) and an effective implementation date of March 1, 2017.

Bollywood Cuisine hopes to be "open and running" by September, definitely by the Fall.

Their new location will be where the Ethiopian restaurant is located on 4th street in Eureka, close to the Co-op.

"We are not out to get rich; we want our family in this community for 50 years."

Pictured above is Surfside Burger Shack owner Chad Smith painting the back room.  All of Surfside, which, is located at  445 5th Street in Eureka, getting a makeover, being painted blue and the back area will have a Tiki bar, a pool table and a pinball machine.

"These days people are food and beverage smart," said Mr. Smith. "We will only be serving local beer and wine." Mr. Smith said that in addition to supporting local wineries; beer from Lost Coast, Mad River, Six Rivers and Eel River breweries will be featured.

Adopt a dog, help free up space and lessen likelihood of lost dogs being euthanized after 4th of July

Please pass the word that there really great dogs waiting to be adopted at the Shelter and every adoption will free up space for those lost 4th of July dogs and lessen the likelihood that dogs will need to be euthanized for space over this 4th of July.

Here is information from a mypet.com article:

* Take your pet out for a walk before fireworks begin to exercise, relax and go "potty".

* Keep him inside during fireworks with the windows securely closed. He may even feel most comfortable in a small interior room. Be sure to remove any items that your pet could destroy, or that would be harmful if chewed or ingested.

* Make sure your pet is microchipped and that your information is up to date.

* If your pet is extremely sensitive to loud noises, talk to your veterinarian before the holiday weekend. He or she will offer ways to help alleviate your pet's fear and anxiety.

If your dog does turn up missing, for most of the County, if dogs are taken to the shelter, the dogs will be taken to the Humboldt County Animal Services Shelter, and you should check www.petharbor.com and use any local zip - like 95501 and then click on Humboldt County Animal Services Shelter and then click to see lost dogs. This listing is updated every hour. Please don't go by the breed you think your dog is. The shelter folks make the best guess about the breed of a dog, but this designation may be different that yours :O)  (Fortuna and Ferndale are serviced by Miranda's Rescue).

You can also call 840-9132 and leave a message that your dog is lost or you have found a dog. The shelter is closed weekends, on the 4th of July, but there are attendants there looking after the animals and they will be checking the recording. Depending on the number of animals in shelter, and their medical needs, etc. you may not get a call back, but it is still important to leave the message!   Please make sure to leave your contact information, your dog's name and any special medical requirements your dog has.

If you find your dog is in the shelter, please come and retrieve your dog, as soon after 10 am on Monday, July 4th as you can, the shelter fills even during the time the shelter is closed - local law enforcement brings in dogs, and then on Tuesday after the 4th, people who have found dogs, but have been unable to locate their owners will bring them in. As long as dogs keep moving out to their owners as soon as they can, somehow the shelter survives this incredibly busy time of year!

The shelter does not take credit cards and so bring a check or cash for the bail money to get your lost dog out. Also you will need proof rabies for lost dogs and so if you don't have proof the shelter will need to get a shot for your dog and charge you for it, and this .

Shelter hours are from 10 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday with extended hours on Tuesday and Thursdays until 7 pm.

Shelter is closed on both weekend days (Saturday and Sunday). The shelter will be closed on Monday the 4th of July.

Eureka Rotary Plaque dedicates plaque to former NAACP president, Eureka Council member Jim Howard

A plaque is being dedicated to Jim Howard, outside the Sea Grill in Eureka at 1 p.m.

Howard is a former president of the local NAACP chapter, from 1969 to 1973 and a former Eureka City Council member from early 1972 through the 1992.

The plaque was designed and made by Chuck Ellsworth, longtime friend, local businessman and member of Eureka Planning and Designing Commission.

He is the first African American Councilmember in Humboldt.

As Mr. Ellsworth and others standing out pointed out that fact is only relevant to recognize the many cintributions of Mr. Howard to our community.

This weekend three residents of McKinleyville/Dows Prairie will receive massive, complimentary dumpsters for their homes thanks to Mckinleyville Community Watch

This weekend  three lucky residents of McKinleyville/Dows Prairie getting massive, complimentary dumpsters for their homes. 

Aaron Ostrom, founder of McKinleyville Community Watch, said "I came upon three dumpsters." Someone donated three large dumpsters and asked Ostrom to put it to good use in the community.

Among the many community oriented things, MCW members do is cleaning up trash in McKinleyville. "We put the word out there for those in need and vetted the requests."

The three candidates can really use them," Ostrom told me.  "They all have great stories and they are all very thankful for this opportunity." 

One is a woman "with back problems" who struggles to keep her property clean; another resident is also an elderly man with similar issues in maintaining his property; the third recipient are children looking after a property of their mother, who lives out of town, and they cannot afford to clean up costs to get the property presentable again.

The dumpsters were delivered today and will be picked up Monday, said Ostrom.

Firework grand opening packed with business leaders, community members and elected officials

Today was the grand opening of Firework.
Business leaders, elected officials, community, County and City staff packed the office space at lunchtime.

Times-Standard, North Coast News, KIEM and myself were the only media present.

Owners Mark and Kiva Sullivan did a joint ribbon cutting for the Eureka Chamber of Commerce and Arcata Chamber of Commerce.

Help this dog rescued from Palco Marsh with her amputation surgery

I got this request from Tamara Faylor.

Surgery is scheduled for this Friday and funds have not been pouring in and so there is a need for more publicity about this sweet girl's amputation surgery need.  Could you please post with priority.  Buddy's & Angel's Animal Rescue is one of the rescues that help the dogs out that would have been involved in the Palco March eviction but for the preplanning and assistance.

I volunteer with Buddy and Angel's Animal Rescue which is a non-profit group in Humboldt County.  
This rescue focuses mainly on the homeless animal population in the area. They assist homeless animals by offering services such as spay/neuter, vaccines, dewormer, flea medicine, mange treatments, food distribution, collar/leash distribution and medical appointments. Recently, they have been working with Companion Animal Foundation, Redwood Pals Rescue, and the City of Eureka to provide even more homeless pets with more medical care! 

On one of the rescue's outreach days at the Palco Marsh in Eureka, BAAR came across a 4 month old, female, Pit Bull puppy with a possible dislocated elbow.

Little Ms. Tanner went into a foster situation immediately, pending a vet exam. "Tawny Tanner" (a nick name given by her foster parent) was seen on May 3rd at Myrtle Avenue Veterinary Hospital in Eureka and was not only spayed, but she also received much needed x-rays to determine what was actually wrong with her leg (many thanks to the City of Eureka/Eureka Police Department and their new Animal Control Officer!!)

Unfortunately, the x-rays showed that the puppy's humerus was broken. Due to the location of the break, a simple cast cannot heal the damage. 

Buddy and Angel's is now needing to raise $2000 so that this puppy can have her leg removed, to ensure that she can live pain free! 

I personally have a deep, sincere, passion to assist animals in need, and I know that a lot of people in the Humboldt area feel the same way. 

Not every person who chooses to own a pet, has the ability to fund unforseen accidents. The homeless community has even less options when dealing with medical care for their pets. This is why "Tawny" needs your support!

BAAR understands and appreciates that there are varying opinions on homeless animal ownership. However, the rescue intends on continuing to advocate for the homeless animals in the county who need help. 

With that said, Buddy and Angel's needs your help to get this puppy's amputation done as quickly as possible!

A fundraiser to benefit the Jefferson Art Project has been going on since 10 a.m. today with a reception from 5 to 6 p.m. featuring foods and drinks. Beverly Wolfe is bartending tonight until 8.p.m.

You get another chance tomorrow from 10 a.m to 9 p.m.

Silent art auction with prices as low as $5, at 3rd and G, where the new Avalon will be opening this summer. Some of the participating artists included Patricia Sennott, Alan Sanborn and Duane Flatmo.

Are there people at the Marsh discouraging others from moving out? If so, who and why? If people felt safe, I could get answers

I walked by yesterday and today to check out the lot where the shipping containers have been converted to units that can house two people. The doors to each unit are brand new.

Volunteers from the Betty Kwan Chinn center, as well as Betty Chinn, have been at the lot registering, welcoming and helping people settle in; HUMCPR's Lee Ulansey was there both days I stopped by; today Council member Marian Brady was there.

Betty was kind enough to open one of the empty rooms for me to take pictures. Some of the units are occupied. The only request Betty had was that no one take pictures of any of the people.

The units are very clean and stocked with basic necessities; a bed, brightly colored bedding and trash can. There is an area with a canopy and tables and chairs for people to sit at and eat, relax.

There were a few people settling in with their belongings, pets as usual on the bed, checking out their new home.

A volunteer asked a woman if she was ready for her shower. The woman nodded and said she was almost finished picking out some clean clothes. The showers and the St. Vincent Dining facility are across the street. 

Outside the lot, a man sat with his leftovers from lunch, enjoying the sunlight and looking somewhat relieved to be able to sit down, somewhere in peace, with no one bothering him.

I spoke with a couple of people, who wish to remain anonymous, out of fear of retribution. They told me there were people at the Marsh, discouraging others, to come up to sign up or move to this lot.

Tried to take a photo of Supervisor Rex Bohn and Supervisor Virginia Bass on a bicycle but Rex barely gave me time to click a photo, he weaved around the crowd and floats.

Senator Mike McGuire and his team had one of my favorite floats. Senator McGuire took time to go say hello to people waiting on the sides. He genuinely remembers people. I told him how much his constant presence is appreciated here in Humboldt.

 Councilmember Marian Brady had a car with flowers.

My other three most favorites were the HCSO, Eureka High School and Zane Middle School marching bands.
