Will Deputy DA Matt Dobie's winning streak continue with a verdict in his third trial?

Former Humboldt Superior Court Clerk Matt Dobie now Humboldt Deputy DA has won both of his jury trials and he has been an attorney for less than a year.

He is currently in his third trial against Deputy Public Defender Emery Welton. It was a short trial. The defendant did not testify. Both People and defense rested their case yesterday. Humboldt Superior Court Judge Steven Steward presided over the trial.

I saw Mr. Dobie giving his closing argument in Joshua Good's 2026 case in which he is charged with Count 1 HS11377 (a) possession of a controlled substance, meth and Count 2 HS11364 (a) possession of a smoking device.

Good has another 2026 case for parole revocation which is trailing.

I have included court minutes from yesterday which gives rulings on motions in limine, witnesses called by the People. Today's minutes include the defense request for mistrial which was denied. The defense reason was ridiculous. Good refused to come to court. Defense declares doubt.

4/8/26 court minutes:

4/9/26 court minutes:

4/10/26: There was a mistrial declared by Judge Steward. Hung jury due to one holdout. 4/14 Setting regarding Good's competency on 4/14;
trial confirmation on 4/29; jury trial on 5/4.

4/14/26: Marsden hearing in closed courtroom. That motion was denied by Judge Steward. Competency hearing also in closed courtroom. Good found competent.
