CA DOJ investigating OIS that occurred in San Diego yesterday

California Attorney General Rob Bonta's office just issued  a press release stating "the California Department of Justice (DOJ), pursuant to Assembly Bill 1506 (AB 1506), is investigating and will independently review an officer-involved shooting (OIS) that occurred in San Diego, California on Friday, August 29, 2025 at approximately 5:45 p.m. The OIS incident resulted in the death of one individual and involved personnel from the Escondido Police Department. "

"Following notification by local authorities, DOJ’s California Police Shooting Investigation Team initiated an investigation in accordance with AB 1506 mandates. Upon completion of the investigation, it will be turned over to DOJ’s Special Prosecutions Section within the Criminal Law Division for independent review."

The Escondido Police Department did a brief post on Facebook yesterday.  "On 08-29-2025 at approximately 4:45 PM, officers from the Escondido Police Department were involved in an officer-involved shooting on the I-15 freeway. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is the lead investigative agency and is actively working to gather all relevant information."
