The latest on the Fortuna "lockdown" is that lockdowns are being lifted. Police units remain in area. The area of concern is still being checked. No suspect located, yet. Investigation is ongoing.

Carson Lee Phoebus arrested by EPD for PC 594 (b) (2) (A) and booked into jail yesterday at 11:36 a.m.

Last time he was arrested March 7 was three times in less than 24 hours.

EPD implements new procedures to lessen adverse impact of repeat theft offenders impacting businesses

The following letter was sent out recently to the Eureka business community by EPD Captain Steve Watson.

Dear Eureka Business Community,
In an effort to lessen the adverse impact of repeat theft offenders negatively impacting businesses within the City of Eureka, the Eureka Police Department has implemented new procedures that became effective this week.


Our intention is to increase public safety and reduce crime while presenting some respite to Eureka’s merchants who
are continually being victimized by increasingly bold and belligerent repeat theft offenders.

Before court today, I had done some research and mentioned this case to my media colleagues.

Press can file a writ in response to defense motion to close the preliminary hearing.

U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the First Amendment in this case.

Witnesses for the 2017 preliminary on Jon Goldberg asked to return now 4th time; defense,wants to close aspects of preliminary hearing

Jon Goldberg's preliminary hearing for his 2017 case was continued twice before today.
It was continued for a third time today.

Witnesses now have to return for the 4th time.

Former Miss Hoopa's jury trial on charges of alleged sexual abuse of a female minor victim confirmed for next week

Trial confirmation was continued until today for former Miss Hoopa, Kayla Brown, whose jury trial is scheduled for March 20.

As of today, the jury trial date remains set.

Brown is charged with charged with four counts of alleged abuse including abnormal sexual interest in children.

Marci Kitchen has to surrender her passport within 48 hours and it will be sealed

Found this on the second floor of the Courthouse right now. It is the original, am returning it to Court administration.

Talk about luck.

She will have to get permission from the court if she wants to leave the state.

Last minute " sneak hearing" to set "bail conditions" for Marci Kitchen

Marci Kitchen had a hearing set last minute,  "to set bail conditons"

This was not in the court system Friday late Friday afternoon, it was not on the online calendar when I checked yesterday. Now, all of a sudden it is in the digital calendar and court records as being filed March 10.

I did check with Humboldt Superior Court and the entry of this into court records was late Friday.

I sent an email to the BOS asking about Laura's law & inaction since last year; Supervisor Estelle Fennell responded promptly

After the post I did below, I followed up today.

I sent an email to four County Supervisors (except Mike Wilson because he was not on the board a year ago)

The title was: "What is the status of Humboldt County and Laura's law?"

The text:
"Specifically Virginia, you have now traveled twice on the issue of mentally health and jails, the last this was in BOS was a year ago.

I want to hear why BOS hasn't followed up in this, not being forwarded to Connie Beck or other staff.

It is a fair more pressing issue that affects citizen safety daily than many issues."

Frequent guest at the Humboldt Hilton, Brian Mello, was arrested by CHP on Saturday.

No information available on case, yet. I have contacted CHP and will update this post.

Update: Couple of sources tell me kidnapping suspect name is known to EPD so maybe victim knows him.

OH's then Nocturnum, now what will that location be?

A reader was curious about equipment being moved into the former OH's location.

One source asked if this was going to be cannabis related. Another source just called and said they have heard the location will be a dispensary, the owner is out of LA. I am looking into price details.

The former OH's morphed into Nocturnum. When that closed, it has been empty but not any more.

The property sold back in December last year. The buyer is from out of town.

I will be updating this post. Have a few calls in and will check records Monday, if needed.

Marin taking steps to address inordinate amount of mentally ill incarcerated and delay in services; when is Humboldt stepping up?

Covering Humboldt County courts on a regular basis, this problem is exacerbated
because NAPA is, often the only option. Local public defenders have to file contempt of court to get any action on transport for inmates that need to be transported to state hospitals.
