ARREST MADE IN STRING OF HUMBOLDT COUNTY ARMED ROBBERIES.

The Eureka Police Department has been investigating a string of robberies which have been occurring at various businesses throughout the County of Humboldt. The robberies began late in the evening on November 3rd, 2016, with the most recent occurring on November 18th, 2016. In all of these robberies, the suspect’s general description, method of operation, and weapons used appeared to be similar.

Through the course of an extensive investigation, detectives of the Eureka Police Department developed a suspect and identified a possible involved vehicle. The suspect was identified as Christian James Shepard (26 Years old of Rio Dell). Shepard was discovered to be on probation out of Sacramento County and had an active warrant for his arrest out of Sacramento County for probation violation.

A countywide attempt to locate was issued for Shepard to all Humboldt County Law Enforcement agencies.

On November 19th, 2016, Rio Dell Police Officers observed Shepard and his vehicle. Officers attempted a traffic enforcement stop on him. Shepard fled and a vehicle pursuit ensued. Shepard led Officers onto Monument Road, but due to the high speeds and reckless driving of Shepard, officers discontinued the pursuit.

In the early morning hours of November 20th, 2016, it was determined that Shepard may have run off the road shortly after the pursuit was terminated, the prior evening, and had spent the night in the woods. Deputies of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office and officers of the Rio Dell Police Department responded to the area and located Shepard and his vehicle traveling on Monument Road, back towards Rio Dell. Shepard was taken into custody without further incident. Shepard was soon transported to Redwood Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released for possible hypothermia.

Detectives of the Eureka Police Department responded and took over the investigation. Shepard’s vehicle was seized and towed from the scene. A later search of the vehicle was conducted, pursuant to a search warrant.

As a result of the search, clothing items, masks, and weapons consistent with those used in the string of robberies were seized as evidence.

Shepard was soon booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on ten (10) counts of robbery, felon in possession of a firearm, negligent discharge of a weapon, terrorist threats, and for the Sacramento County probation warrant. Shepard does not qualify for bail due to the Sacramento County Arrest Warrant being a “no bail” warrant.

There are no photographs being released of Shepard at this time, due to investigative steps that still need to be completed.

The Eureka Police Department would like to thank all Humboldt County allied agencies, especially the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department and the Rio Dell Police Department, for their assistance in this investigation. If not for their help, this dangerous criminal may not have been taken into custody.

This is an open investigation and anyone with information regarding this case is urged to contact Senior Detective Ron Harpham at (707) 441-4300.

Former HCSO Deputy Bang Cao Humboldt bound

Deputy Bang Cao who was shot in the chest by William Nelson in Shelter Cove when he and another deputy showed up to serve a court ordered civil eviction and survived left Humboldt for greener California pastures last year.


It seems he misses Humboldt and is returning to Humboldt County.

Damn, LOCO and TS corrected their verdict amount in the McClain lawsuit

Glad to see both Times Standard and Lost Coast correct the error that the verdict in the lawsuit filed by Tommy McClain's parents was not $300,000 but $150,000.

Best coverage of this case was by NCJ's Kimberly Wear and LOCO's Rhonda Parker . Hiring Parker is the smartest decision LOCO has made.  I enjoy her court coverage and hope to see more .

Stop and Rob on Wabash lived up to it's name, again, last night

Stop and Rob aka Stop and Shop on Wabash was robbed at gunpoint around 11:30 p.m.  Shots were allegedly fired by the suspect who fled on foot.

Making threats on Facebook James just because someone voted for Trump? Maybe EPD should check this out?

Steve Payton started out as a client but has become a good friend of mine. I did not see such comments after the 2008 or 2012 election but it's okay to make threats in 2016?

Humboldt Superior Court makes changes to calendar to better serve public

Effective November 21, 2016, the Superior Court of California, County of Humboldt will modify how it does business to better serve the public.  Last year the Court made some changes to facilitate the large number of pending jury trials, which included having all day jury trials, and modified how the criminal calendars were called.   The changes that are being made at this time are to make further improvements.  As of December 2015 there were approximately 726 pending criminal jury trials; by comparison as of November 2016 there are currently 431 pending criminal jury trials.

"I am the first to say the changes the Court has made is not the sole reason for the reduction in the number of pending criminal jury trials.  The Court has designated more time for trials, so the attorneys handling those cases have had to step up in order to be prepared.  Change is difficult, and everyone involved in the system has kept an open mind and are doing their best, while vigorously representing their clients.  These changes to the criminal calendars are meant to make additional improvements which should prevent delays that the litigants, witnesses, jurors, and public in general often experience, resulting in more consistency, accountability, and an increase in overall access to justice," states Joyce Hinrichs, the Presiding Judge.


As a broad overview of the Humboldt County Criminal Court, there are four judges and one commissioner assigned to hear criminal matters.  Each of the judges are assigned approximately one quarter of the felony caseload, and under the new system they will hear these matters post preliminary hearings through sentencings each morning at 8:30 a.m.  After calling their individual calendars, two courtrooms will be conducting jury trials the balance of each day, one court will be hearing preliminary hearings and arraignments, and the other court will be calling felony and misdemeanor calendars.  The misdemeanor calendars that are currently called by the commissioner remain  unchanged.  These changes are outlined on the Court's website at:  www.humboldt.courts.ca.gov.

Way cases are scheduled in Humboldt Superior Court to change again

$200,000 bail for Trinidad armed robbery suspect Aubrey Ross

On Thursday, November 17, 2016 at about 4:07 a.m. Humboldt County Deputy Sheriffs responded to the Cher-Ae Heights Casino in Trinidad for a report of an armed robbery that had just occurred. Witnesses reported that a male suspect dressed in all black entered the casino, brandished a firearm and demanded money. The male suspect left with an undisclosed amount of money.

CA campaign to reduce number of collisions caused by impaired drivers funded by grant

 A campaign to reduce the number of collisions caused by impaired drivers, supported by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), will focus on education and enforcement.  “Statewide Impaired Driving Enforcement” (SIDE) will run for one year, from October 1, 2016, to September 30, 2017.

Instead of the preliminary hearing scheduled today at 8:30 a.m., Mario Alexander had an intervention scheduled.

The preliminary hearing was continued to December 8.

No change after intervention.

Bail reduction and release denied for man charged with lewd acts, oral copulation/sexual intercourse with two female children, ages 10 and 9

Mario Alexander is charged with 9 counts of alleged sexual acts with two minors, Jane Doe 2 born in 2006 and Jane Doe 1 born in 2006.

The alleged acts occurred between 2012 and 2016. Counts 1 to 7 pertain to Jane Doe 2, Counts 8 and 9 to Jane Doe # 1.

His bail is set at 2.7 million.

Marci Kitchen's preliminary hearing still scheduled for December 5

There was an intervention hearing scheduled this afternoon for Marci Kitchen.

Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for December 5.

Both intervention and preliminary hearing have previously been continued.

Deputy District Attorney Stacey Eads is prosecuting the case. Kitchen is represented by private attorneys, Mr. Patrik Griego and Mr. Benjamin Okin.

Mr. Griego was in court today for the intervention , as was Ms. Eads.

No change in the date, said,Mr. Griego.
