The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is investigating a head on collision that resulted in the deaths of two adults and seven children on New Year's Day.
The children were between the ages of 6 and 15 years old. They were traveling in a Ford F-150 with a driver, who has been identified by authorities as a woman, when the vehicle was struck at approximately 8 p.m. by a Dodge Journey outside of Coalinga.
The 28-year-old driver of the Dodge, identified as Daniel Luna of Avenal, was traveling southbound on Route 33 in California and veered onto the shoulder of the road before overcorrecting and swerving. The Ford burst into flames following the crash. It was only equipped with six seat belts.
It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor. CHP is waiting on toxicology results.
