POP, Eureka Mission and City Code Enforcement help out an elderly property owner

Eureka Police Department’s Problem Oriented Policing (POP) unit, working in collaboration with the City of Eureka’s Code Enforcement unit and the Eureka Rescue Mission, helped to not only improve the beauty of a neighborhood, but to make things a little easier for a local woman this week.

The Eureka Police Department’s POP team had been receiving neighborhood complaints about a property in the Sequoia Park area of Eureka. As part of looking into the identified issues, they came in contact with the elderly property owner. The owner explained that she was having difficulty with trespassing and other issues involving the property, along with trouble keeping up with the maintenance of the property due to her situation. POP Detectives worked with the property owner and neighbors to address the original concerns, along with the installation of some preventative measures.

One of the biggest contributing factors to many of the issues identified was the overgrown state of the property. POP and Code Enforcement looked into ways to assist the property owner with this situation. They ultimately contacted the Eureka Rescue Mission and they made arrangements for members of their work program to assist the woman with the landscaping issues.

Earlier this week, the project was completed and the landscaping was brought to a manageable state.

Through the interactions with POP, the property owner and neighborhood members, there are plans in progress to more permanently improve the status of the property that all involved are pleased with.
