Three arrested by Humboldt County Drug Task Force for alleged possession and sale of heroin and meth



     On June 16, 2017, at about 9:00 A.M. Special Agents with the Humboldt County Drug Task Force with assistance from a Humboldt County District Attorney's Office Investigator served a search warrant at a residence located in the 2500 block of C Street in Eureka.  The search warrant was granted after a week long investigation led Special Agents to believe narcotics were being distributed from the residence.

995 motion to dismiss charges in Jon Goldberg's 2017 case denied

This morning in Courtroom 5, Judge Christopher Wilson denied the defense's 995 motion in the Jon Goldberg 2017 case.

The motion to consolidate the 2016 and 2017 cases will be heard on July 6.

EPD Code 3 response to call about male with facial injuries outside Courthouse Market

EPD responding to a call regarding a male with facial injuries outside Courthouse Market. Code 3. Another EPD unit on the way. Medical responding.

EPD left and had to return because patient was allegedly "uncooperative" with ambulance crew.

Nicholas Johnson's jury trial for the death of David Ganfield is scheduled for October 24.

Attempts to dismiss this case against Johnson by his attorney, Mr. Neal Sanders were unsuccessful.

KHSU Thursday Night Talk on hate speech, the first amendment and Humboldt County


KHSU's Thursday Night Talk will discuss the Eureka NAACP's request for stricter moderation rules on local online comment sections. 

Sohum upskirting suspect jury trial continued; DA files more serious charges & alleges "sexual compulsion and the purpose of sexual gratification."

The defense attorney for Sohum upskirting suspect, David Nunez was expected to ask for a continuance this afternoon and Mr William DuBous did.

Since the last hearing, the People filed a motion to amend the complaint. According to Nunez's attorney in court, "these were more serious charges."

The first amended complaint has  three counts. Count 1 and 3 are PC 647 (j) (2). Count 2 is 647.6 (a) (1). The special allegation for Count 1 and 3 is that Nunez committed the alleged charges out of "sexual compulsion and the purpose of sexual gratification."

Wade Daniel Harris arrested again, booked and held without bail

On Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at about 0819 hours, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Bridgeville Resident Deputy Filippini was on routine patrol on Highway 36. At mile post marker 18, the Deputy recognized wanted suspect Wade Daniel Harris, age 35, standing on the side of the road. The Deputy made contact with Harris and gave him verbal commands in attempt to take Harris into custody. Harris refused to comply and a short foot pursuit took place.

Daniel Asbury was identified as the dad of the girl in the video who yanked the other girl to the ground . The person identifying Asbury is the victim's uncle in this comment on my Facebook page.

Chad Smith's preliminary on alleged sexual abuse charges reset for July 20

Chad Smith's intervention was continued from yesterday to a special set time of 3 p.m. this afternoon.

The defense made an oral motion yesterday to continue the preliminary hearing scheduled for June 15. That date was vacated. New preliminary hearing is on July 20 at 9:45. Intervention is scheduled for July 18.

Pre plea report and mental health evaluation ordered for Matthew Steele, charged with possession of child porn

Matthew Steele, who was arrested back in January and charged with possession of matter depicting minor engaging in sexual conduct had a preliminary scheduled for June 14.

Today, Steele had an intervention hearing. His preliminary hearing was vacated. A pre plea report hearing scheduled for PC 288.1 is scheduled for 10:15 on 7/27.

Former Miss Hoopa's jury trial for alleged sexual abuse vacated for July 26


Trial confirmation for Kayla Brown, former Miss Hoopa, was continued by stipulation to June 12. On that day, the jury trial of June 19 was vacated. Trial setting is scheduled for July 26.

Brown is charged with four counts of alleged sexual abuse, including abnormal sexual interest in children.  The alleged victim is female. Brown is represented by Mr. Ben McLaughlin.

The jury trial is scheduled for June 19. Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Schaffer is prosecuting the case.

Marci Kitchen jury trial scheduled for November 13

Marci Kitchen's jury trial setting is scheduled for June 13.

People wanted a mid October trial but due to Mr. Benjamin Okin's schedule, the jury trial is scheduled for November 13. Trial confirmation October 25th at 8:30 in Courtroom 2.

A month estimate including jury selection.

Deputy District Attorney Stacey Eads is prosecuting the case. Mr. Patrik Griego and Mr. Benjamin Okin are representing Kitchen.

The vehicle HCSO has pulled over by Tompkins Hill Road is not involved in Karen Court incident

A comment on Redheaded blackbelt prompted a reader to ask me, "The HCSO has a black SUV pulled over by Tompkins Hill Road and occupants are at gunpoint. Could this be the same vehicle??"

I checked with HCSO. According to Sheriff William Honsal,  "No. The vehicle pulled over at that location is associated with a stolen property case in the Loleta area. "

On 06-12-17 at about 11:16 AM, the Arcata Police Department received a report of a male subject suffering from a gunshot wound in the 2200 block of Karen Ct. Upon the officers' arrival, they located the victim with a gunshot wound to his right hand and left bicep.

Judge Marilyn Miles to retire, effective July 31, 2017

Judge Marilyn Miles will be retiring, effective July 31, 2017. Judge Miles served as  a Judge since 1997.

Defense requests motion to continue preliminary for Chad Smith

An intervention was scheduled on June 12 for Chad Smith, former restaurant owner and present owner of Humboldt Longboard, who is charged with 13 counts.

Count 1-9 are felonies and involve alleged sexual charges of sexual abuse involving two minor victims. Counts 10-13 are misdemeanors; disobeying a domestic relation order.

Community tips lead to arrest within hours by Fortuna PD in the alleged incident posted earlier

The community came through on the post below and Joshua McDaniel was arrested tonight for the incident below. He was booked into the jail at 11:04 p.m. for violation of probation.
