"I called the cops because of the verbal threats, and the disturbance to me and of the other customers around.

A reader went out for what he thought was a quick run to get a coffee at Dutch Bros. Ended up calling EPD on an "agressive panhandler."
"I told him panhandling is against the law within city limits and I’m trying to do business. With my son in the car.  Not to mention it’s dangerous and he doesn’t know who could be on the inside of the car. "

"He got agitated and started shouting at me with curse words and aggressive statements of verbal assault.  He wandered away about 10 -20 yards and I got out of the car just in case he got aggressive with the employee, and to protect myself and my vehicle. I called the cops because of the verbal threats, and the disturbance to me and of the other customers around.  The police questioned him, and then came back and question me another time and I was well within my right to say and act accordingly."

The City of Eureka has a pan handling ordinance, a shopping cart ordinance. Both completely useless because of the bleeding hearts in this town, "sue happy" Richard Salzman and Peter Martin and especially the "do nothing" Eureka progressive City Councilmembers . Instead of acknowledging Take Back Eureka this Tuesday for a photo op at the City Council meeting, why don't you do something about the miscreants who think they are entitled to take over this town.

(You are welcome, the usual anon trolls. This should keep you busy for the rest of the day since you have no life but to cyberstalk me. Pathetic losers who can't deal with facts; stupid to keep providing documentation.

***warning***only read if you are an anon troll who didnt get this the 1st time or the 2nd time I already explained this***

Here are some graphics since reading is not a skill you trolls possess.

  2. Thankyou. This type of thing happens to me also. I run out to run an errand, etc., really quickly, then
I get approached by an aggressive pan handler, basically anywhere in Humboldt. Seems worse
around the holidays. Wish the aggressive panhandlers would go away.

  3. we live in hard times for many all over this country. It can be scary and nerve wracking for us and them.....
    Happy holidays folks!

  4. How about a simple design: A hand held out in a circle with a bar across it ( \ ) and the
    word 'NO"
Someone approaches you, you point to it. If there's conflict, then it originates with the panhandler. The wearer only identifies him/herself as someone who is saying 'No' without a
    confrontation.
Of course the confrontational ones would probably get in the person's face and demand why they wouldn't tell them 'no' in person.
To Anonymous 8:43 PM, 'scary and nerve wracking for (us and) them. Somehow the panhandlers I've encountered are anything but suffering from being scared of the mark and 'nerve wracking' is defined as "causing stress or anxiety.".
An ordinary citizen doesn't know the mental state of the person who approaches him and if they become loud and beligerant, they have cause to fear for their safety and well-being. Some people
might react and give the beggar money to go away which only encourages them.
Compassion is a fine virtue but one needs to limit it to their own actions and not preach to those who have other views. Moral responsibility comes from the individual, not a collective liberal ethos.
I chose my charities, research them, make sure they're responsible and that the money goes to the work, not to salaries. The money I 'could' give a panhandler could represent a monthly contribution to a charity I support. ( some I donate $5 a month, but for them it adds up. )

    1. have we ever met? You have no idea of my "Liberal ethos". I am a humanist to my core. I observe the same things most of us see. I have never seen so many fellow humans sleeping in store front doorways as I have just this week. The system is broken, people are broken and we have no good answers or ways to fix this mess. Merry Christmas Gabriel and may you and yours prosper and have good health. You are truly blessed.

    2. Gabriele can answer for herself but I will point out the hypocrisy of your first statement. Have you met her? You have no idea of what she or anyone else does and come here and preach. Liberals, humanists talk all this peace and concern yet vote for morons like Jerry Brown, Huffman, Newsom, Feinstein and other idiots that create the problems and dependency by encouraging and enabling drug addicts, by making excuses and by fighting job creation in the name of bs. Some of those people are there because they continue to chose drugs, alcohol, not taking meds, are pedophiles, sex offenders.Others are there because liberals spend way too much time online shutting down all other opinions, demonizing growth and anyone who doesn't think like them and are more concerned about legalizing weed than tackling real problems. There are answers to this mess but the people standing in the way are radical Democrats , liberals and progressives. And in Humboldt, the problem has been and remains mostly uneducated voters who vote with feelings and based on small town dysfunctional alliances and attack anyone who speaks the truth. You want less people on street, start by looking at the choices you make in electing officials.

    3. If I see the panhandlers coming, ( they will come right toward you, very bold),
I run as fast as I can around them; if it looks like I can't clear enough space to put a safe
distance betwen myself and them to get to my car in the parking lot, I wait until they have moved along.
Some are pretty big, almost always male, scary, aggressive.

  5. You don't have to give money to display compassion.

    ReplyDelete
  6. The thing is, nearly all the " panhandlers " have made their begging a profession. The more aggressive are displaying the job skills it takes to be successful in their profession. They successfully milk money out of the compassionate fools and then use it to buy drugs and alcohol to party the night away leaving feces, vomit and trash we all have to deal with every day. People used to ask me for a job, now they demand my money, I tell them no with my hand on my spray and a gleam in my eye, they generally move on quickly.

  7. I met the "bad seed" social worker for Humboldt County in 1974 who is to blame for all this social endowment and gifting of public money. She created welfare cases to boost her salary-not to make a difference assisting those in true need. The more cases she carried, the larger the staff required so she would become a "supervisor" and make more money. This was GREED at its fullest, and 40 years later Humboldt wreaks of social programs. The funding comes from the feds, the state, and grants from progressive organizations to make SOCIALISM prevail.
The transients are the byproduct of their dedication. Humboldt "invites" them with all their free give a ways. Flock to Eureka and Arcata and life will be grand! No one should give a dime to these sub standard leeches. Learn to say NO and continue that mindset. Stand firm everyone or the leech lemmings will overrun you.

    1. How convenient that you are anon? Guessing from your snark, you obviously are liberal. Funny, you liberals dont give a damn about what Jesus would say except as a put down when you have no facts. Try this bs somewhere else. Christians in this town do way more for the downtrodden than any liberal. Betty Chinn, Rescue Mission, Teen Challenge, most putting into action and making a difference for the downtrodden are Christian. What are you doing to make a difference except for trolling on this site? Drugs, needles, entitlement are the legacy of an enabling liberal mentality. All you liberals do is constantly attack anyone who speaks the truth and act all sanctimonious. Your leftie sites must be boring because you live to comment here. You lost the 2016 election because of your denial.
I must be striking a nerve since you libs are out in full force with the attacks this weekend. So amusing to see you react. And prove once again, you have no life and nothing better to do.

  9. Anonymous 10:46 PM.
You describe yourself as a humanist. Fine. I used the term 'liberal' because much of what you said I associate with more progressive liberals. Both terms are so broad they are catch-all phrases which really say very little.
But I take great offense that someone who proclaims themself to be a 'humanist' then chooses to tell me I am "truly blessed".
Since you do not know me you have no way of knowing that and as I believe there is only One (however each of us chooses to identify that Source by name) who can bless. We can ask/pray that someone might be blessed or thank for blessing we feel we have received.

"Merriam Webster: a doctrine, attitude, or way of life centered on human interests or values; especially :a philosophy that usually rejects supernaturalism and stresses an individual's dignity and worth and capacity for self-realization through reason"
That may be how you see yourself. But for someone who sees nothing outside their own sphere, well a blessing, or indication that I am blessed is applying your system to me and I reject it completely.
If your values make you happy, fine. But without a foundation and understanding of how this
situation arose and a grasp of drug-driven behavior, your words are only words. And why don't you use a real name?

  10. What's interesting in the comments is the absence of discussion on who panhandles: addicts. Not one hundred percent, but close. If you are down and out (and not mentally unstable) Humboldt County has services for you, which is a really good thing. But in general those services do not extend to those with untreated addictions

I've heard it said that the only people who fly signs are addicts, and in my experience both here and in SF that is true. Are there more addicts now than before? I would say so. Prop 47 really, truly gave the shaft to communities in that regard. And so did the company responsible for pushing OxyContin as the solution to all our pain needs. That one company alone (Perdue Pharma) bears the responsibility for shafting the entire country...And when they reformulated OxyContin so that you couldn't crush the pills (which circumvented the "contin" part of the name, the time-release formula) many people turned to heroin...and flying signs And getting into people's faces who just want a cup of coffee.

    1. Excellent points Bones. And all the treatment centers will not change a thing until the root cause is addressed. Drug suppliers, big pharma as well as illegal suppliers. Humboldt's two major economies: Drugs and grants. Each a part of the problem. All other industry gets killed. We could be promoting nature, European style hostels, hiking, relaxing tourism, if this place got cleaned up.

  11. Laying blame on big pharma does nothing but possibly line attorneys pockets with outlandish jury awards that we all pay for by higher pharmacy costs. Panhandling junkies jonesing for a fix, root cause, cheap readily available heroin, meth, pot. Blame, weak willed aimless idiot's with nothing better to do. Fix, arresting and punishing said weaklings and their suppliers till they get it. Getting it, you get high, you languish in jail, not the revolving door of probation, you get out you get a job or you go back. Supply and Demand, let's take away the supply of junkies so the demand for drugs goes away. Punish the cause, the weak willed whining junkies.
Blame your Doctor for your addiction to heroin because you let yourself con the doc into more meds for the pain that wasn't there anymore, Doc cuts you off and your to weak willed to stomach a few days character building so you puss out a get hooked on heroin, cry me a river. Sac up, ask for help and stop being a drain on the rest of us. Support your Sheriff, local and state police, you see something say something, call it in, turn them in. Thanks John, let's keep up the pressure.
