Why did the City of Eureka board up all three buildings on Third Street owned by the Squires; work was being done and the City signed off on inspection permits

The City of Eureka already has people living on the streets. Again, with no plan, they put people with a fixed income or just struggling by to pay bills, on the streets.

The amount the City pays for relocation is not enough to pay rent and the outrageous local security deposits. So, these people have two options: the street or a shady, local motel for a month.

Floyd Squires provided me with a list of tenants of 216, 218 and 220 Third Street. To paint all tenants as "problems" or "drug addicts" is wrong.

The City of Eureka also signed off on permits in 2015 and 2016. So why board all three buildings?

Is the City of Eureka this vigilant in going after all  "slumlords" in Eureka or just easy targets they see not protected by locl political and financial special interests?

City of Eureka press release:

In response to numerous complaints from neighboring businesses, the City of Eureka has vacated and boarded 216, 218 and 220 Third Street owned by Floyd and Betty Squires.

The closure was necessary due to unsafe and unsanitary conditions which pose a significant and immediate threat to public health and safety.

A warrant for the closure was issued by the Superior Court on September 6th, 2017.

The hazardous conditions include numerous violations of the California Building Code and Health and Safety Code, as well as violations of the Fire Code and Eureka Municipal Code.

Conditions include large quantities of used hypodermic needles, feces, broken windows, hazardous wiring and plumbing, infestations of cockroaches and general dilapidation and improper maintenance.

The squalid condition of the property has led to it becoming a haven for drug dealers and addicts with EPD making multiple arrests recently for heroin and other drugs.

The City does not undertake these actions lightly and does so only after providing the Squires with every opportunity to remedy the violations voluntarily. The tenants of the buildings will be provided relocation funding by the City to assist in establishing suitable housing. The City will continue to utilize legal remedies to reduce or remove blighted properties throughout the community.

City of Eureka Press Release: ( August 2017)

City Press Release:

Pursuant to an inspection warrant issued by the Superior Court, staff from the City of Eureka’s Code Enforcement division, with the assistance of the Eureka Police Department (EPD) and Humboldt Bay Fire
(HBF), are performing inspections beginning today of eleven properties owned by Floyd and Betty Squires.
As a result of long-running unresolved code enforcement cases, complaints from tenants and neighbors, and observations by City staff, EPD, and HBF, the City believes it is necessary to fully assess these properties and characterize the nature, extent, and severity of the violations present. Violations already observed include structural deficiencies, exposed wiring, leaking plumbing, unpermitted work, blocked
exits, missing fire protection devices, broken windows and rotten siding . Many of the properties at which the inspections are being performed are subject to the lawsuit filed by the City against the Squires
in 2011, which continues without resolution. At this time, occupants of these buildings continue to reside within the buildings and have not been displaced.
The City believes that proper maintenance of buildings helps ensure the safety of the occupants, first responders, and the public. Derelict buildings negatively impact property values, tourism, and the
quality of life for our citizens. As such, following the inspections, the City intends to examine its options to resolve the violations found through available legal means.

    1. Jacqueline, and if you think that that is the only drug den in Eureka and Floyd Squires is the only slumlord, I got a bridge I can sell you.

The City of Eureka looks the other way when convenient. They need to clean up their act, stop supporting programs and non profits that contribute to the problem and start applying the same standard to all landlords.
