San Diego County pilot program helps inmates with mental illnesses seek treatment; Ventura families sue state mental state hospitals
More recently,San Diego County Supervisors and two Ventura families sue state mental health hospitals.
"County supervisors approved a pilot project this past week that puts men who are in jail with mild to moderate mental illness in an intensive treatment regimen of 12-step meetings, outpatient therapy sessions and neighborhood support programs. The hope is that the system will make it easier for participants to better transition back into communities and reduce recidivism."
"Two families filed a lawsuit claiming state hospital officials purposely denied mental health treatment by delaying the transport of mentally incompetent inmates — oftentimes beyond 90 days — and left them without proper care as they waited in county jails."
