Hoopa tribe votes unanimously to approve MOU with County to cross deputize tribal officers

Fifth District Supervisor Ryan Sundberg confirmed that "The Hoopa tribe voted unanimously last night to approve the MOU between the County of Humboldt and Hoopa Tribe to cross deputize the Tribal Officers."

Supervisor Sundberg told me, " The only two jurisdictions in California who have these MOU's are Humboldt and Del Norte Counties. This will add much needed law enforcement to the Hoopa Valley and free up the Sheriff office to patrol other outlying areas. "

The agreement with the Hoopa tribe is tentative until it is approved by the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors. Undersheriff William Honsal told me that it should be on the March 22 agenda. Currently, only the Yurok Tribe has the same agreement.

  1. Sundberg is incorrect. There are 6 Tribes with Cross-Deputization agreements in California according to the California Judicial Council.

    1. I checked the site. Can you send me a link to where you found this information?

I just checked with Undersheriff William Honsal and Sheriff Mike Downey and they confirmed that only Humboldt and Del Norte have deputization agreements with the tribes in the state.
