"When it becomes personal, it becomes community"

The above quote is from Dale Maples at the installation of military banners at the Eureka boardwalk on F Street. The Maples family, Humboldt Masonic Lodge No. 79 and the City of Eureka all are responsible for getting this project done.

"This seemed like a good way to recognize those in service locally," said Eureka City Manager Greg Sparks. "When Dale Maples approached the City, it was very intriguing to the City Council and they thought this would be a good way to build community pride."

Attending this morning were Humboldt County Supervisor Virginia Bass, Eureka Mayor Frank Jager, who spoke on behalf of the City of Eureka. Councilmembers Melinda Ciarabellini and Natalie Arroyo were present this morning and then headed out to the Adorni Center for the Veteran's Day Event organized by the City of Eureka and Rotary Club of Southwest Eureka.

"We were contacted by the Dales Maples," said Allan Nielsen, a member of Humboldt Masonic Lodge No. 79. "We thought it was a nice idea to honor men and women that serve in the armed forces from the City of Eureka."

Mayor Jager thanked the Maples family and the Humboldt Masonic Lodge No. 79. "We are proud to have these banners," he said. "These men and women deserve our gratitude. We have a lot of people who would do harm and these men and women keep our way of life safe."

Dale Maples said, "I love Eureka." He particularly thanked Sparks and Miles Slattery from the City of Eureka, thanked Eureka City Council, especially, "Melinda Ciarabellini and Natalie Arroyo for being our champions on City Council" and "finally the Veterans and their families."

"This is a way for us Eurekans to know the men and women and see their faces, " said Maples. "When you make it personal, it becomes community."
