"I love Humboldt, this area, the people, our culture here is unique"

The Philosophers Stone Gallery, located at 218 F Street Eureka sells minerals, book, gifts, local jewellery and orchids.

Owner Miles Wright said he was going to open up his store in another town but "decided to give Old Town a go." The store opened on 4th of July this year. He has received great feedback from customers and most of his business has been from facebook, word of mouth and walk-in traffic. He gets a lot of walk-in-traffic and usually, the store has a booth at Reggae on the River.

"I love Humboldt, this area, the people, our culture here is unique," said Wright. He is a California native and moved to Humboldt in 2006.

Wright started off as  a glassblower and branched into other mediums, most recently being a jeweller. He got interested in stones while he was buying supplies for jewellery. "I have always loved crystals." Wright has supplies from miners all over the world.

I asked him about the name of his store which he co-owns with his wife. "We wanted it to be a gallery of crystals. We also wanted items out for people to enjoy and experience. We have everything here from a $1 pocket stone to rocks for serious collectors."

"I have fun selling things people love, it's like selling puppies."

"People come in and want to know about metaphysical properties, we have books in the store. A lot of shops label rocks with metaphysical properties. I like to let people decide for themselves. Some people want to know about the properties, others just like to buy rocks." Wright is constantly expanding and improving the store based on what he sees people want.

Wright has donated to community causes such veterans and NorthCoast Dance fundraisers. He is very happy to live and do business in such a wonderful community and it is his way of showing his appreciation.
