Uri Driscoll Humboldt's third district Supervisor

I suggested that he should run and spoke with Uri after that post and he said he was considering it.

Allan Dollison told me that Uri confirmed he has decided to run for third district Supervisor.

Uri just confirmed.

"I plan file papers shortly. I look forward to bringing together ideas and ultimately solutions for addressing our challenges and enhancing the many qualities of our North Coast communities.
Deep down we all know that real solutions come from a wide spectrum of perspectives. My job will be to bridge those perspectives."

  1. Will he run as a Democrat? Seems like a perfect opportunity to run as a spolier. Thank goodness the County has primaries or else he would split the Democratic vote and allow a conservative in.

There will be a "real" Democrat running - i.e. one who understands that those left of center have to fight for public resources and interests. This Democrat will win over Uri. If the incumbent Mark would like to run again, he will win (again).

I'd be interested to see if the right will even field a candidate as there won't be too much difference between, say Karen Brooks and Uri on all things land use policy.

    1. Jon, I am going to wait and see when papers are filed.

  2. In the mean time you might want to explain to your readers why you would like Uri to run (outside your sporting nature of course) and I wouldn't.

You might explain why he could never be endorsed by the HCDCC even if he did run as a Democrat. You might ask how his politics differs from those of his brother John who works for our Congressperson - who, btw has been fond of supporting non-Democrats.

You might ask all these questions in the context of a county that voted by a margin of 25% for statewide Democrats over Republicans in an off-year election.

If you did all these things, you might realize, hey, we are dangerously close to having one party rule up here on the North Coast specifically and California generally. You might then ask - is this a good thing? What can I do to change this?

Or, we can continue to accept this game of non-politics in our elections that serves only to benefit those who wish to keep actual reasons for local policies as quite as possible.

These are all things you could do before papers are filed, but I for one would be happy if you addressed any of these even after papers are filed. We have about 9 months before the primaries next June. Should be interesting.

Have a good day John. Don't work too hard. BTW, you'll be pleased to know I now can buy locally for my continuing, but hopefully short-term, addiction to cold, contained coffee shots. Lost Coast has produced a yummy alternative to the Starbucks at the gas station.

    1. Jon, you have a blog and apparently a lot of time on your hands. I do not. Original news and information takes time. Why don't you spend some time researching the answers you so desperately need. You do not dictate what I write on my blog. Take some time that you spend cutting and pasting what you call blog posts or some of the time you spend commenting on other blogs and media sources and do some real work. Research, call Uri. Now that would be constructive. We have a lot of naysayers like you who spend their time questioning others and do absolutely nothing of value or real information for the community.

    2. That was a bit snarky Mr. Chiv.

What I would like to see is the fiction become fact... that local races become non-partisan.

I have no belief in the local Democratic Party... it's just too easy to manipulate. There will never be one party rule because there is no one Democratic Party. The Democrats in Name Only (DINO's) prove that.

I do agree that Jon has his own blog and should concentrate on his own knitting. But still I thought he deserved a bit more of a civilized response from you.

But as I've said before to both you and Jon, it's your blog to do with as you wish.

A suggestion... "Battle of the Jo(h)n's... Blog Martial Arts Competition... Two Jo(h)n's Go In, One Jo(h)n Comes Out."

I'm just full of good ideas. Or something...

    3. MOLA, you are entitled to your opinion but there are pkenty of people who think liberal jon is snarky in his responses to me and others. When you call out the snarkiness of others in the blogosphere, instead of just jumping of the defense of liberal jon. Freedom of speech is okay as long as I agree and say what you and liberal jon want.

There is no battle between Jon and me or anyone else except those who try to create a situation where there isn't.

    4. I dunno... I guess my aim is to reverse the overt animosity that has been a feature of the local Blogosphere lately. It does no one any good except those who get a rush out of watching a fight.

I think there is a difference between taking on the idea as opposed to the author of the idea. I'll go after a bad idea tooth and nail (as you no doubt well know) but I do try to leave the creator of the bad idea out if possible (emphasis on "try").

I think Jon basically goes after the bad ideas. I'm not sure I've seen him exercise personally bashing those who disagree with him. That is what I call "snarky behavior" by the way.

So, let me leave you with a thought: I'm not afraid to call out Liberal Jon if he is wrong. Nor am I afraid to call out the Tuluwat Examiner when they are wrong. And I'm not afraid to call out John Chiv when he is wrong.

      I'm an equal opportunity annoyer.

    5. Give me an example MOLA where you called liberal jon out. I must have missed it but then I don't keep track of every comment you or liberal jon make.

  3. Jon,
I am not very hard to get a hold of and I encourage you to give me a call. My bet is you are going to find more reasons to support my candidacy. People from a wide range of perspectives want to see a change. I am inviting all those perspectives to participate in that change. There has been a recent tendency for Liberals to isolate themselves and that is going down the wrong road. You know that. While Mark Lovelace certainly had some good ideas he ended up isolating himself unfortunately. We are all in this together and we need to stay engaged.
For the record I have been a registered Dem pretty much all my life except for a brief stint as a Green when Ralph was running for president. I knew he couldn't win but felt like we need more than a two party system. While I may generally vote Dem I am not stupid enough to think that real solutions come from one side or the other. My support for Karen Brooks was to make sure there was a healthy debate and to try to make sure Mark was aware there is a broader range of issues.
I am proud of Karen and all those who stick their neck out. There are a tremendous number of people who really care about this county. Showing that you care to often means someone is going to try to label you as a Liberal or Conservative a Green or a Redneck. Personally I know we all have something to bring.

Uri, he was isolated, rightfully, b/c he stood up against a right wing conservative developer-friendly board who overturned 2 elections worth of work to formulate a GPU in their own vision. We have more of the same to anticipate from you, sadly.

You have supported the most conservative of candidates in the past and people on the left including environmentalists and those thinking about sustainable futures will have any business supporting you in the 3rd. There might be some argument for you as a Democrat in the 1st, 2nd or even 5th, but even then I think the left would be misguided.

"I am not very hard to get a hold of and I encourage you to give me a call." Why not online?

My first question Uri would be, as a Democrat, who have you supported locally in Supervisorial Elections for the past 12 years. Karen Brooks? Wow, but not a surprise.

I'm very familiar with your anti-government takes that tend to support private property owners at the expense of public decision making process. This is a conservative mind-set that will disallow important decisions we need to make going forward.

Second question... Will you be backing State Senator and Democrat Mike McGuire in supporting the candidacy of Rex Bohn? What about Supervisor Estelle Fennell? If so, why would we want the most progressive/liberal/thoughtful district to be an easy 5th vote?

Good luck Uri, and thank God for primaries in Humboldt County Supervisorial candidacies. It will be interesting to see if the right will run with you in the race. We'll see. I thought Karen would run again, but you two would share a similar base and your candidacy may have made any more conservative candidate think twice before throwing their hat in the ring.

    2. Also, MOLA and John, tnks for the replies, I had my witty and good-feelings post eaten by The Google. I'm not feeling as warm now given Uri's candidacy. C'est la vie.

The take home imho was that parties are not manipulated as much as directed. The cool thing about them is we get a chance to do this in public. What is the alternative? As soon as there is a better one, let me know!

    3. That was odd... Did my responses to Mr. Chiv and Liberal Jon just disappear? If it was a technical glitch please let me know and I shall try again.

    4. MOLA, I did not delete your comments so you can resend them if they do not show up but after I publish those, I am not printing comments that have nothing to do with the post and are a repitition of basically the same idea. You and Liberal Jon have had more than your share of comment space on this post alone and some of it has nothing to do with the post at hand or elections.

    5. Sorry for being a comment space hog Mr. Chiv.

      Jon:

All right Mr. Liberal Jon, you scallywag! I'm a callin' you out! Da Da DUUUUUUUUM!

Being serious for the moment: I quite frankly don't care if Mr. Driscoll is a Good Democrat. I don't care if he is a Good Republican. I wish party never entered into the discussion of the issues associated with an election that is supposed to be non-partisan.

I do care what Mr. Driscoll plans to do for our county and to whom he is beholden to.

After all, we have already seen that a Local Democratic Party Seal of Approval does not mean very much.

There you go Mr. Chiv. LJ and I seriously disagree. We present our arguments. We get on with out lives. We do not tell each other to go MYOB.

    6. Wow MOLA snarky does suit you. That sarcastic little stunt proves nothing. And you continue to use this space to hurl further insults, why are you being so defensive.

Do you know Uri? Or do you just blindly jump on the naysayer bandwagon? If you are so concerned only about what is good for this community, did you read his responses, call him.

If you are still commenting on this thread, you have not moved on, you are trolling. There are other blogs that excel at that, don't they miss your presence?

MOLA, the passive aggressive approach does not work with me. You used to have an open mind. Whose favor are you so desperately trying to win by this approach.

      Have a nice evening MOLA.

    7. John:

You've obviously not read one word I have written here.

Why you are angry with me I do not know. I've been on your side many times when no one else would speak up for you. I'm not your enemy. Why treat me as one?

I don't know Mr. Driscoll. I would like to know more about him. Perhaps I will by reading your blog.

By my own personal definition, a snarky remark is when one goes after the personality or the circumstances of the writer, not the worthiness of the ideas that person professes.

By my own admittedly self-produced definition, I have not been in the least Snarky toward you. What has happened? Can you no longer take criticism? Can you no longer suffer the disagreement of other people?

I am sorry if I have offended you. It was not my intention.

Yes, do have a nice evening Mr. Chiv.

    8. MOLA, you need to follow your own advice. Read what you have written, not just here on this blog. Read your comments on my blog prior to the last month and now and then your comments on my blog and other places and recent comments you have liked. They speak for themselves.

I hope you will continue to read my blog, comment and like the past, stay on topic. I do plan to have a great evening as I hope you do.

Why do you and liberal jon feel the need to keep responding despite three attempts to point out the obvious.

That is the question that readers an draw their own conclusions to. Uri is a great candidate. One who can draw a diverse crowd of supporters. He will only scare those who like polarization. I have supported candidates that are decline to state, Republicans and Democrats because of who they are as individuals. And Uri is a perfect example of someone who is not afraid of disagreement.

  4. Jon, because I do not allow anonymous comments, that may deter people, lets hope that someone besides you and MOLA weigh in. Uri has responded, so have I. You have had more than your share of saying the same thing and had responses. This is not the liberal jon show where you keep repeating the same thing over and over hoping that the rest have to think like you. Run for office if you have the answers and solutions because criticizing is easy.
